Turning Adversity into Opportunity: The Inspiring Story of Dharani Dhar Behera

FEATURE: There are only a few individuals who possess the rare combination of unshakable will and relentless dedication to overcome life’s most challenging obstacles. Dharani Dhar Behera is one of them. Born in 1955 in the small village of Kujimahal, Chandaka, Odisha, he grew up facing numerous adversities, including the untimely death of his father. Yet, through sheer determination and resilience, Mr. Behera transformed every setback into an opportunity for growth.

Humble Beginnings: Overcoming Personal Loss

At a young age, Mr. Behera was thrust into the responsibility of supporting his family after his father’s passing. Unable to continue his studies due to financial constraints, he began by opening a small grocery shop in his village. His entrepreneurial spirit took a bold step in 1979 when he decided to buy an auto rickshaw—a rare sight in Bhubaneswar at the time. Although this venture was short-lived due to unforeseen challenges, it didn’t discourage him. Instead, he shifted to a wholesale grocery business in Kujimahal, continuing his journey of resilience despite the hardships.

Leadership in the Community

The loss of his mother at the age of 30 became another turning point in his life. Seeking new horizons, Mr. Behera moved to Bhubaneswar with his wife, where he started a spice manufacturing unit in Nayapalli. His connection to his roots, however, remained strong, and he soon became involved in local governance. After an unsuccessful attempt in the Panchayat election, he was elected as a block member in 2002. This role gave him the platform to serve his community, working on various initiatives such as building schools, roads, and temples—improving the infrastructure of his village and strengthening his bonds with the people.

The Vision for Fish Farming

In 2009, Mr. Behera embarked on a new venture, inspired by successful models of fish farming he observed in Berhampur. In partnership with his friends, he purchased 100 acres of land near the Taratarini Temple in Ganjam and began fish farming. Despite initial difficulties, including a devastating loss due to the Hudhud cyclone in 2013, his persistence led to success. Today, the venture has grown to 220 acres of land, benefiting 12 partners, 30 permanent employees, and 50 seasonal workers.

Building a Legacy of Social Service

Now at 70, Mr. Behera is committed to social service. He has dedicated his life to improving the lives of the people around him, not only through his business but also by supporting his community in various ways. His greatest joy, he says, came from his role as a block member, where he had the opportunity to directly serve the people and improve their living conditions. He strongly believes that with determination, loyalty, and support from the government, anyone can succeed in business and make a difference.

A Message of Hope

Mr. Behera’s journey serves as a powerful reminder that success is not about avoiding challenges but about facing them with a dedicated heart and an unwavering spirit. His life story offers invaluable lessons on resilience, loyalty, and the importance of giving back to society. As he looks to the future, Mr. Behera is focused on continuing his work for the betterment of Odisha, especially in the fishery sector, which he believes holds immense potential for the state’s growth. His message is clear: “If you are dedicated and have the will to succeed, there is no obstacle that can stop you.”
Dharani Dhar Behera’s remarkable life is not just an inspiration for Odisha, but for anyone striving to overcome personal or professional hardships. His unwavering commitment to his work and people stands as a powerful testament to the value of perseverance and dedication.
