On Friday, the 14th National People’s Congress (NPC) meeting in session saw the historic election of Xi Jinping to a third term as president of China. According to the Xinhua news agency, he was also chosen to lead the Central Military Commission (CMC).In a presidential election with no rivals, over 3,000 members of the (NPC) unanimously chose Xi as the winner at Beijing’s Great Hall of the People. The 69-year-old President also publicly swore fealty to the Constitution after the election.
As the constitution’s term limitations were eliminated in 2018, Xi’s new five-year term became possible. The vote on Friday was mostly symbolic because he had already secured a historic third term as the leader of the Chinese Communist Party at a significant party meeting last October, cementing his position as the country’s most powerful leader since Mao Zedong.Every five years, the country’s leadership is changed, and these transitions typically closely resemble the changes made public during the party congress.
