Deep seismic activity was detected in the Delhi-National Capital Region following an earthquake that struck China’s Kyrgyzstan-Xinjiang border region, measuring 7.2 on the Richter scale. After the earthquake rattled high-rise buildings, people were observed leaving their homes in many residential areas of north India in search of safety.
According to the National Center for Seismology, the earthquake began at a depth of 80 kilometers and had its epicentre in the Chinese province of Xinjiang. The US Geological Survey reported that the earthquake occurred 129 km west by northwest of Aykol, China, and that neighboring countries Kyrgyzstan, Tajikstan, and Kazakhstan were also affected. The earthquake’s intensity was estimated at 7 on the Richter Scale.
The epicentre of the earthquake, which struck at 2:09 a.m. (1809 GMT) and a depth of 22 km (13 miles), was located in the mountainous border area of Wushi County in the Xinjiang region of northwest China, according to the China Earthquake Administration. The epicentre was situated approximately 50 km (31 miles) away from Wushi, and five villages were situated in a 20 km (12 mile) radius surrounding it.
Along the border between Xinjiang and Kyrgyzstan, some houses have collapsed, reportedly injuring six people. The earthquake apparently affected 27 trains, and the Xinjiang railway department immediately stopped operating. Tuesday saw dozens of aftershocks, the largest of which was estimated to be 5.3 in magnitude and located roughly 17 kilometers from the epicentre.
