The writer who also weaves magic with Crocheting Skills

Interview with the Writer of “Strength in the Streets” Joy Woods Turlington

The writing of Joy Woods Turlington is simple but it is sure to leave a long lasting impression in your mind. Making best out of challenging situations is one of the best qualities one can have . Let us meet the author who has this quality and know more about the Author’s Journey.

Q1) Since when did you start having interest in writing ? Tell us something about your writing
journey.

Ans : Becoming an author was something I was curious about . I wondered if my imagination and storytelling abilities would be interesting enough for readers. I wanted to tell a story, have that story hold the reader’s attention, and promote a positive approach to situations . My journey began with my first book , Strength in the Streets. This was my first book therefore , I wanted to give room for my character to grow. I wanted to illustrate the initial turbulence of the character and then the abilities the character has to “ overcome the outcome. “ The beginning was rocky for the character and it wasn’t a traditional coming of age story . But the character grows through the adversity and each of the challenges presented. My character’s journey was inspired by some of the stories you hear , some of the stories you see and some of the stories one has to personally feel. In this journey of writing I learned our feelings are ever changing but
unconditional love is substantial, concrete and has a sense of permanency. We can identify love , we can put our hands on that . I hope my book gives hope , love and joy for parents of teenagers that can’t wait to grow up and for the children that dont hear ‘i love you’ often enough . I want to unite families and promote healing and wholeness for my readers . And it’s absolutely okay on the journey if you miss a stitch . rewind and yes, ” keep crocheting! “

Q2) How did the idea of “Strength in the Streets” come to your mind. Tell us more about the plot of

Ans : The plot was inspired by three things , healing , wholeness and yes, even imagination. I
thought of how bad it would be if these things were never addressed in my own parental
experience and imagined what I would do to resolve these factors on paper . I began to write it out,
starting small chapters at first and I wanted to see if my created content was worth listening to. So I
told a story , some fiction and some inspired by personal accounts. I think the greatest authors are
the ones that feel and experience the most . Stories that have a message are inspirational. They
should be told. Some people suffer in silence without ever healing . I wanted this book to tell a story
of a family healing and offer hope with a creative plot including a slight twist. I also used music as
therapy in the story .
Strength in the Streets was born in 2020 . I want the character to grow up and show his real
potential . I have ideas on how he can maybe have his own for a while , travel and meet new people .
I hope this character will give a traditional sense of hope for the future. We’re all human and we all
fall short at some time or another , tap into your “strength” and it’s no shame or judgement even if your “strength” is in your children . That’s what parenting is about , identifying your strength . It’s not about anyone in particular , simply how you can take a challenge and pray. Watch how your prayers can change anything, both parents and children .

Q3) Tell us something about your hobbies . Have you mastered the art of managing your hobbies and
your passion by now or you are still finding ways to do it ? How did crocheting come to your life ?
Ans : Crocheting was learned in first grade . My family was working late and my first grade teacher
was babysitting until they came home. Who does that? My first grade teacher. We would crochet
and talk and she always had a kosher pickle to snack on. I loved that time. I dont eat alot of pickles
but I still crochet as she taught me . This is a favorite pastime that relaxes me and besides it is fun. I
haven’t crocheted for a while actually . I am so flattered and honored that someone likes it.
Q4) From preparing the draft of the book , to selecting the cover page to publishing it , it is a process
that requires total scrutiny and involvement . Tell us about your experience and were there any
hardships that you faced in the process ?
Ans : Absolutely , the process was challenging . But it was so worth the wait on the final product . I
felt good about it .

Q5) There is a large section of the youth who think of writing their solo book but lack the courage to
do so . What is your advice to them ?

Ans : My advice is an old saying from My Grandma, “What you have in your head no one can ever
take from you.” Your ideas and knowledge are valuable and your writing is the extension of your
thoughts. Carefully plan and then conquer that goal.

Q6) Do you think social media has left an impact on the writers ?
Ans : Yes and No. Social Media has changed the dynamics for writers in advantageous ways . There is more
available for writers to access . This factor should have a positive impact on things like book
accessibility and advertisement features.
