India’s biggest natural arch discovered in Odisha by GSI

A spectacular “Natural Arch” was found by the Geological Survey of India (GSI) state unit in the Kanika range of the Sundargarh forest division. The Jurassic epoch is thought to be the time of genesis for this geological marvel. The “Natural Arch” has also been given the Geo Heritage badge by GSI. If completed, it will be the largest natural arch in the nation to bear the Geo Heritage designation. This oval-shaped arch is 12 meters high and 30 meters long at its base. The natural arch’s alcove may reach a maximum height and breadth of 7 and 15 meters, respectively.

The natural arch and its surroundings are a rich mine of fundamental sedimentary formations, including planner and cross-bedding, combined with sporadic current ripples, aside from its exceptional magnitude. These characteristics point to a sedimentation process that took place in a high-energy fluvial setting. Due to fault activity and the distinctive characteristics of the lithotype, which allowed for sub-aerial weathering over a prolonged period of time, this natural arch was formed.

The Sundargarh Natural Arch is one of the world’s geo heritage sites, and it needs special care and protection to be preserved for future generations. By designating these locations as national geological monuments, the GSI takes the initiative to designate and protect them. The GSI carries out the required actions to safeguard and preserve these sites in collaboration with the relevant State governments.

Rare and extraordinary geological, geomorphological, mineralogical, petrological, and paleontological aspects define Geo Heritage Sites (GHSs), which are notable sites. Natural rock formations, caverns, and other geological features of national and international importance are frequently present at these locations. Together with the corresponding State governments, the Geological Survey of India (GSI) is instrumental in locating, recognizing, and safeguarding these sites.
