NIA Starts Interrogation Of OTP Sharing Accused Over ‘Pakistan Link’

Abhijeet Sanjay Jambure, who had been detained, is currently being questioned by a team from the National Investigation Agency (NIA), who arrived in Bhubaneswar on Monday. Jambure allegedly maintained regular contact with a number of Pakistani intelligence personnel. Abhijeet, a worker at a software business, was detained by the Special Task Force (STF) of the Odisha Police on June 29 in Pune, Maharashtra. According to K.K. Panigrahi, superintendent of police, STF, he is now being held on a four-day police remand. According to the SP, Abhijeet is connected to at least seven Pakistanis and ten Nigerians over WhatsApp.

Abhijit was questioned by the Mumbai Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) team on Sunday, and the NIA team began questioning him on Monday due to allegations that the suspect had direct contact with several Pakistani operatives and Nigerian nationals. Abhijeet, according to Panigrahi, had long-term contact with two Pakistani intelligence officers. Through Facebook Messenger, he met Danish @ Syed Danish Ali Naqvi in 2018, who claimed to be a freelancer at Chegg (an American provider of educational technology). Danish is from Khanki, Faisalabad, Pakistan.

Danish received Abhijeet’s Chegg user name and password. Abhijeet’s identification was being worked on by Danish at Chegg, but the money was credited to Abhijeet’s account in India. He said that Abhijeet was forced to perform some “work” for Danish against his will. Danish introduced Abhijeet to Abdul Hamid, a friend of Khurram’s from Karachi, Pakistan. Khurram is thought to be a top intelligence officer in the Pakistani Army with a sizable agent base or network in India. The SP further said that he used to send money to several PIOs operating in India on Khurram’s orders.

When the STF had detained Pathani Samant Lenka in connection with the OTP sharing fraud, Abhijeet had transferred money to him. According to authorities, the accused Abhijit was questioned by the police and several agencies to learn more information about the Pakistani agents, if he had supplied any important information with them, and whether he had any connections to other PIOs in India. Six people have been detained thus far for giving certain criminals and alleged Pakistani agents the OTP for pre-activated SIMs.
