The Thane district, close to Mumbai, has a highly inhabited slum area called Bhayandar East, where the fire originated.A large fire broke out in the early hours of Wednesday in the heavily populated slum region in Maharashtra’s Thane district, which borders Mumbai. One person died and several were injured. Around 4.30 am, a fire started in the Bhayandat East neighbourhood of Azad Nagar. It swiftly spread through the little lanes, consuming a number of houses and shops.According to Deputy Commissioner of Police Prakash Gaikwad, the surrounding dumping of rubbish caused the fire to ignite.
The Mira Road Fire Brigade reports that 24 fire tenders have been sent in to put out the fires that are rampaging through the slum.
“Every effort is being made by the Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation to contain the fire. There are 24 fire brigade teams on the scene. Commissioner Sanjay Katkar of the Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC), who was in charge of the rescue and relief efforts at the scene, expressed optimism that the fire would be contained within the next hour.
