FEATURE: In the high-stakes world of seafood exports, where competition is fierce and only the boldest survive, Prakash Kumar Mohanty has emerged as a game-changer. From humble beginnings to building one of India’s top seafood export powerhouses, his story is a masterclass in resilience, innovation, and relentless ambition. A visionary leader with an unbreakable spirit, Mohanty has transformed challenges into stepping stones, proving that with the right mix of passion and strategy, the impossible becomes achievable.
Born in 1970 in Odisha, Prakash Kumar Mohanty pursued a degree in Commerce from Sambalpur University. His professional journey in the seafood industry began in 1995 when he joined Magnum Group, a company that played a crucial role in shaping his expertise in prawn culture, aquaculture feed, and seafood exports. Over 27 years, he honed his skills, mastering the nuances of seafood processing and international trade. However, driven by an entrepreneurial spirit, he took a leap of faith in 2021, leaving behind a stable and successful career to carve his own path in the industry.
In 2023, Mohanty founded Snow World Marine Exports Private Limited, a venture that quickly rose to prominence in India’s seafood sector. Within just two years, the company has established itself as a key player in the global seafood market, exporting high-quality products to China, Japan, the Middle East, and the United States. Under his leadership, Snow World Marine Exports has achieved a staggering turnover of ₹400 crore in 2025, solidifying its reputation as one of India’s premier seafood export companies.
Mohanty’s approach to business is deeply rooted in innovation and quality control. The company employs state-of-the-art machinery imported from Germany, ensuring world-class processing facilities with top-notch hygiene and safety practices. His commitment to quality has helped set new benchmarks in the industry, with a strong focus on sustainability, traceability, and ethical production.
Beyond seafood exports, Mohanty has ambitious plans for diversification. The company is in the process of establishing another seafood export factory and venturing into the button mushroom industry in Balasore. Recognizing the immense potential in this sector, he is setting up a large-scale production unit to meet domestic and international demand. Additionally, he is spearheading the development of a solar power plant, reinforcing his commitment to sustainability and renewable energy.
One of the most commendable aspects of Mohanty’s journey is his commitment to social responsibility and women’s empowerment. Today, Snow World Marine Exports employs 1,500 individuals, with 1,000 of them being women. By creating a workforce where women play a dominant role, he is not only driving economic progress but also championing gender equality in an industry traditionally dominated by men.
The road to success was not without challenges. Leaving behind a well-established career to start a new venture came with its share of skepticism, financial risks, and operational hurdles. However, Mohanty’s belief in his vision, coupled with his extensive industry experience, helped him navigate these obstacles with resilience. An initial investment of ₹120 crore laid the foundation for his company’s exponential growth, and today, he stands as a testament to how calculated risks can lead to remarkable achievements.
The seafood industry in Odisha has witnessed significant growth, especially with the support of government initiatives such as the Mukhya Mantri Matsya Yojana and the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana. These schemes have provided crucial subsidies and incentives, encouraging entrepreneurs like Mohanty to expand their businesses and contribute to the state’s industrial development. He remains optimistic about the future, believing that Odisha is on the cusp of becoming a major hub for seafood exports and industrialization under the current government’s policies.
For young individuals looking to make a mark in the seafood industry, Mohanty emphasizes the importance of technical knowledge and specialized education. He encourages aspiring entrepreneurs to pursue courses in marine science, now being offered by institutions like Berhampur University and other universities in Odisha. According to him, a solid academic foundation, combined with hands-on experience, is the key to succeeding in this competitive field.
As the Managing Director of Snow World Marine Exports, Prakash Kumar Mohanty continues to push boundaries, explore new markets, and drive innovation within the industry. With upcoming projects in seafood exports, button mushroom production, and renewable energy, his vision extends beyond personal success—he envisions a thriving, self-sufficient industry that benefits both entrepreneurs and the broader community.
His story is not just about building a business; it is about transforming an industry, creating employment, and inspiring the next generation of entrepreneurs. Through perseverance, dedication, and an unrelenting pursuit of excellence, Prakash Kumar Mohanty has cemented his legacy as a true trailblazer in India’s seafood industry.
