Ishan Kishan Faces Backlash for ‘Bizarre’ Decision to Walk Off—Asked to Explain Unexpected Dismissal

Ishan Kishan’s strange dismissal during the Mumbai Indians vs Sunrisers Hyderabad match on Wednesday has become one of the most talked-about moments of the IPL season. The left-handed opener, having just gotten off the mark, attempted to glance a delivery from Deepak Chahar that drifted clearly down the leg side. The ball missed the bat by a fair margin and was safely collected by MI’s wicketkeeper Ryan Rickelton.

What followed left everyone baffled — there was no appeal from the bowler or keeper, and umpire Vinod Seshan appeared ready to call it a wide. However, Kishan inexplicably chose to walk, prompting the umpire to signal him out. The decision shocked viewers and even the former cricketers analyzing the game.

Speaking after the match, former India pacer Varun Aaron expressed disbelief at the incident. “It was quite bizarre. He must have felt he hit it — no batter walks if they don’t believe they edged it. But with no appeal and the umpire uncertain, he should’ve reviewed it. This kind of dismissal, especially when he’s averaging just 5.50 over the last seven matches, is disappointing,” Aaron said.

Former England cricketer Nick Knight also weighed in, saying, “I was watching it live — and if I’d hit the ball, I’d know. The umpire wasn’t going to give it out, but when Kishan started walking, it created total confusion. Honestly, just let the umpire make the call.”

With Kishan’s form already under scrutiny, this unexpected dismissal has only intensified concerns, leaving fans and analysts questioning what exactly he was thinking.
