Bhubaneswar: In a major leadership transition at one of India’s largest cooperative institutions, the Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative Limited (IFFCO) has appointed K. J. Patel as its new Managing Director, effective August 1. The announcement follows the retirement of Dr. U.S. Awasthi, who led the organisation for over three decades and played a pivotal role in transforming IFFCO into a global cooperative powerhouse.
Patel, a seasoned professional with more than 32 years of experience in the fertiliser sector, was previously serving as Director (Technical) at IFFCO. A mechanical engineer from Saurashtra University, he has held critical positions across IFFCO’s units, including the Paradeep plant in Odisha—the largest fertiliser complex in India—where he is credited with major operational enhancements and safety upgrades.
Announcing the appointment, IFFCO Chairman Dileep Sanghani expressed confidence in Patel’s ability to steer the cooperative into a new era of technological advancement and sustainable growth. “Patel brings deep industry knowledge, strategic vision, and a strong technical foundation that aligns with our goals,” Sanghani said. He also lauded Dr. Awasthi for his visionary leadership and decades of service to the Indian farming community.
Under Dr. Awasthi’s leadership, IFFCO saw exponential growth in both scale and scope. Fertiliser production increased from 24 lakh tonnes to over 86.5 lakh tonnes during his tenure. In FY 2024–25, the cooperative posted a turnover of Rs 41,244 crore and a net profit of Rs 2,823 crore—a 16% year-on-year rise. Awasthi also championed innovation, leading the introduction of nano urea and nano DAP, and expanded IFFCO’s reach into insurance, rural telecom, agri-tech, and international joint ventures.
With K. J. Patel at the helm, IFFCO is expected to continue its focus on sustainability, digital innovation, and expanding the use of advanced fertiliser technologies. His technical expertise and grassroots understanding of cooperative operations position him as a natural successor to lead IFFCO into its next chapter.
