Officials said Thursday that the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) will begin a citywide dog census the second week of September. Early in the morning, when things are still reasonably peaceful and stray dogs like to congregate on the roadways, the exercise will be carried out, which will facilitate the counting procedure. BMC Commissioner Chanchal Rana stated that sanitation personnel, BMC officials, and Swachh Sathis (cleanliness volunteers) will participate in the census. Before the activity starts, each participant will get specialized training.
On the recommendation of veterinary specialists, the dog count will be conducted concurrently in every ward. Three to four officials will be assigned to each ward, and the entire procedure should be finished in seven to 10 days. According to the commissioner, the census will be used to ascertain the precise number of dogs in Bhubaneswar as well as how they are distributed around the city. Up until recently, population data was the sole source used to estimate the number of dogs. There are between 40,000 and 45,000 dogs in the city, according to the most recent estimate. The forthcoming experiment will yield precise numbers for improved management and planning.
