In a landmark decision that fulfills a decades-long aspiration of the people of Odisha, the Government of India has officially sanctioned the formation of the Kalinga Regiment in the Indian Army. The announcement marks a moment of immense pride and celebration for Odias worldwide, who see this as the rightful restoration of their rich and ancient martial heritage.
The formation of the regiment is seen as the culmination of a persistent and passionate movement, recently championed by leaders like Dilip Ray, Member of the Odisha Legislative Assembly, and vocal advocates such as Mr. Mohanty. The final assent from Her Excellency, President Droupadi Murmu, the Supreme Commander of the Indian Armed Forces and a revered daughter of Odisha, has made this historic moment possible.
This decision honors a legacy of courage stretching from the Kalinga War, which transformed Emperor Ashoka, to the Paika Rebellion of 1817, one of India’s earliest organized armed struggles against British rule. The formation rights a historical wrong, after Odias were unjustly struck from the martial race list by the British following their valiant revolts.
Speaking on this momentous occasion, Mr. Mohanty, a prominent voice in the movement, expressed his elation: “Our hearts are filled with gratitude. We are eternally grateful to Her Excellency, President Droupadi Murmu. As a daughter of Odisha, she understood the deep emotional and historical significance of this appeal. Her assent has turned a dream into reality. We also extend our deepest gratitude to our Honourable Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, whose decisive leadership has once again proven that for him, the nation’s pride and heritage are paramount. This is not merely about creating a new army unit; it is the restoration of ‘Odia asmita’ (Odia pride) on the national stage.”
The new Kalinga Regiment, which may be styled as the Kalinga Light Infantry, will provide a dedicated and distinguished home for the youth of Odisha, who have for centuries served with distinction in various other regiments of the Indian Army. It recognizes the state’s continuing contributions to the nation’s defence and finally gives its martial tradition a unique identity, similar to other celebrated regiments like the Sikh, Gorkha, Rajput, and Maratha Regiments.
This historic victory is a tribute to the vision of legendary leaders like the late Shri Biju Patnaik and the tireless efforts of countless veterans, public representatives, and citizens. The Kalinga Regiment will stand as a lasting symbol of Odia valour and serve as an inspiration for generations to come, strengthening the diverse and inclusive fabric of the Indian Army.
