To guarantee a plastic-free Baliyatra in 2025, the Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) has started a number of projects. The team is led by Commissioner Kirandeep Kaur Sahota, IAS, while the sanitation campaign is being led by Jubulee Behera, Deputy Commissioner, Sanitation, CMC. In order to ensure systematic collection and recycling in accordance with Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) compliance, the CMC has worked with Coca-Cola on PET bottle management. For the effective collection, sorting, and segregation of plastic and dry trash, five “Swachh Shops” have been set up.
Cash-based rewards are given to guests who deposit used PET bottles at counters. Vendor awareness campaigns are used to promote the strict implementation of the ban on single-use plastic in fairs. The CMC is encouraging merchants and guests to use biodegradable cutlery and carry bags.
The “Give Plastic, Take Bag” initiative urges people to exchange their plastic garbage for environmentally friendly bags. Additionally, “Mo Khata” selling kiosks, which are becoming more and more popular among the public, promote organic compost in prominent areas. At Historic Baliyatra, a number of stalls and kiosks have been set up, and the overwhelming sales indicate that this alternative organic compost is becoming more and more popular.
