From Mathura and Vrindavan to Delhi, Mumbai and other parts of the country, devotees are gathering at temples for prayers, devotional programmes and special rituals.
Mathura, traditionally regarded as the birthplace of Lord Krishna, has been transformed with colourful lights and decorations. Large crowds of devotees have gathered ahead of the midnight celebrations traditionally associated with Krishna’s birth.
Devotees observe fasts, offer prayers and prepare special bhog and sweets. Temples conduct elaborate ceremonies, while devotional music and Krishna-themed cultural programmes continue throughout the day.
The festival is particularly significant in the Braj region, where Mathura and Vrindavan are at the centre of celebrations. Authorities have also made arrangements to manage the large crowds expected at major temples.
President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended Janmashtami greetings to citizens, highlighting the continuing cultural and philosophical importance of Lord Krishna’s teachings.
