India’s coal industry stands at a critical intersection of energy security, industrial development and environmental responsibility. As the country continues to strengthen its domestic energy capabilities, the sector’s future increasingly depends on technological modernisation, efficient mining operations and responsible resource management. Playing an important role in this evolving landscape is Dr. Hemant Sharad Pande, Chairman-cum-Managing Director (CMD) of Western Coalfields Limited (WCL), a subsidiary of Coal India Limited.

With more than three decades of experience in the coal mining industry, Dr. Pande brings a combination of technical expertise, operational understanding and management leadership to one of India’s significant coal-producing public sector enterprises. He assumed charge as CMD of WCL on 8 May 2026, following his tenure as Director (Human Resources) at the organisation, a position he held from January 2025.

Dr. Pande began his professional journey with Coal India Limited in 1989 as a Mining Engineer after graduating in Mining Engineering from Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT), Nagpur. Over the years, his career has taken him across Western Coalfields Limited and South Eastern Coalfields Limited, where he undertook several important responsibilities in mining operations and project management.

Before taking charge as CMD, he served as Area General Manager of the Raigarh Area at SECL and General Manager (Project) at Gevra Area. During these assignments, he was associated with large-scale mining operations and initiatives involving SILO-based coal dispatch systems, in-pit crushing infrastructure and technology-enabled operational mechanisms. His work also included supporting environmentally conscious coal transportation and improving operational efficiency.

His contribution to organisational development extends beyond mining operations. During his tenure as Director (HR) at WCL, he emphasised employee welfare, healthcare management, administrative transparency and digital transformation. Initiatives such as the SWASTH healthcare portal, Dispensary Management System (DMS) and modernisation of HR portals were implemented to improve service delivery and streamline internal processes. His responsibilities also encompassed industrial relations, social security, pension systems and medical facilities for retired employees.

Academically, Dr. Pande has built a multidisciplinary foundation. Along with his Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering, he holds a Master of Technology (M.Tech) in Mining, a Master of Business Administration (MBA) and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Management. He has also undertaken Advanced Global Techno-Management training at ESCP Business School in Europe, complemented by international study visits to France, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium and the Netherlands. In 2022, Coal India Limited recognised his contribution to the industry with the Best General Manager Award.

As CMD, his leadership priorities are closely connected with WCL’s broader mission of strengthening India’s energy security while advancing efficient, safe and environmentally responsible mining. The integration of modern technologies, improved coal dispatch infrastructure, digital systems and sustainable mining practices represents an important part of this transformation.

Dr. Pande’s professional journey reflects the evolution of a mining engineer into an organisational leader, bringing together technical knowledge, employee engagement and operational experience. As the coal sector navigates changing energy requirements and emerging technological possibilities, his leadership at WCL forms part of India’s larger effort to build a more efficient, resilient and future-ready mining ecosystem.
