Home ministry suspended license under Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) of six NGOs out of which four are Christian groups.
“Concerns have been raised with respect to the effect of U.S.- based Christian benefactors including Seventh Day Adventist Church and Baptist Church as to Indian affiliations; a test is on,” the authority said.
A FCRA permit is compulsory for a NGO to get investment from foreign countries. Two U.S.- based Christian contributors are additionally under the Ministry’s scanner for financing NGOs and gatherings here, a senior government official said.
The four Christian NGOs whose FCRA was suspended are Ecreosoculis North Western Gossner Evangelical in Jharkhand, the Evangelical Churches Association (ECA) in Manipur, Northern Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jharkhand and New Life Fellowship Association (NLFA) in Mumbai. The explanations behind the suspension or infringement were not determined.
The Bajrang Dal, had deterred gatherings composed by the NLFA in Mumbai in April and September a year ago. The Hindu strict gathering affirmed that the gathering was an affection for strict transformation and later presented a FIR to the police.
The FCRA permit of NLFA was suspended on February 10, as indicated by Home Ministry information. As indicated by the NLFA’s site, the NGO started tasks in India during the sixties after the appearance of volunteers from the New Life Churches of New Zealand in 1964.
An email question from The Hindu looking for the NLFA’s reaction to the suspension of the FCRA permit evoked no answer.
Any association, affiliation or NGO in India can’t get foreign investment if they don’t have a permit under the FCRA, which is controlled by the Home Ministry.
Suspension of FCRA permit implies that the NGO can no longer get new foreign investment from contributors who are on the hit list of Home Ministry.
