Indian Army launches ‘Secret Indigenous App- SAI’

The Indian Army has developed a messaging app for its use called Secure Application for Internet i.e. SAI. According to sources, the military will use the app from April 1. The app is said to compete with apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal. It has both voice, text and video calling facilities.

The Ministry of Defense announced in October 2020 about the SAI app, saying that the security features on this Android app are very strict. It is based on local in-house servers and codes that can be replaced and canceled as needed. The app was revised by Army Cyber Group and CERT-in auditors.

The app will be used within the military so that it can be used safely. The iOS development of this app is in progress. This is being developed by Colonel Sai Shankar. It is said to be a safe alternative to apps like WhatsApp, Telegram and Signal.

The dispute with China escalated in June last year. At the time, India had banned 58 Chinese apps. In July, the Indian Army was ordered to remove nearly four apps from its mobile phones. The army was then advised not to use WhatsApp too much. Even the Indian Armed Forces were told not to use smartphones at bases and dockyards.

The Indian Army has since developed the SAI app and developed the National Information Center Sandes and the Center for Development of Telemetry SAMVAD. This app is more secure than other messaging apps.
