The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Odisha Police arrested a Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) agent for allegedly misappropriating Rs 1.81 crore by making entitlements from policies issued in the name of dead persons.
According to the official reports, Kabiraj Behera of Jhadakata under Kanas police limits in Puri district was arrested by EOW after an investigation made on a complaint filed by the authorised officer of LIC’s Khurda branch which alleged that Behera had cheated the LIC to the tune of Rs 1.18 crore by submitting false death claims in connivance with nominees of deceased persons. He has been booked under Sections 420, 467, 468, 471 and 120-B of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
The report further added that Kabiraj was working as a LIC agent since 2003. Apparently, he had falsely managed to get 23 policies in the names of four dead persons, falsely showing them as alive, between 2013 and 2019. Police informed that he managed to get fake death certificates in the names of insured persons in connivance with the concerned officials. He was arrested after the recovery of some objectionable documents from his house.
