In the State Executive Committee meeting chaired by Chief Secretary Suresh Chandra Mahapatra, it was decided that the State Government will introduce transmuting coastal villages to make those prepared to face Tsunamis.
According to the reports, Chief Secretary Suresh Chandra Mahapatra stated that in recent years due to the erratic rainfall pattern they need to develop the capacity for urban flood management. Also, prepare for handling fire and other emergencies in high-rises. He pursued strengthening disaster management with high-tech equipment and capacity building training on multi-hazard responses.
Further, Pradeep Kumar Jena, Development Commissioner and Special Relief Commission elaborated the technical, financial and administrative contours of disaster management at the meeting and stated that two villages, Noliasahi in Jagatsinghpur and Venkatraipur in Ganjam districts received UNESCO-Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC)’s recognition as first Tsunami ready Indian villages in the Indian Ocean region.
The Committee also decided to develop a special urban flood management unit in the ODRAF. Odisha Fire Service units would be strengthened with hi-tech equipment and training to manage the fire and other accidents in high-rises, particularly in urban industrial areas of the State.
