Sabyasachi Mukherjee Withdraws Mangalsutra Advertisement After Backlash

After facing several backlashes and treat from Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Narottam Mishra, designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee pulled promotional material for its mangalsutra collection.

According to the reports, Mukherjee stated that in the context of making heritage and culture a dynamic conversation, the Mangalsutra campaign aimed to talk about inclusivity and empowerment.  The campaign was intended as a celebration and they are deeply saddened that it has instead offended a section of the society.

On October 31, Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Narottam Mishra issued a 24-hour ultimatum to Mukherjee and he demanded that he should withdraw the advertisement as it portrays the mangalsutras which is the traditional Hindu necklace for married women as objectionable and obscene.

The mangalsutra advertisement by Sabyasachi’s brand showed intimate portraits of men and women and as soon as the designer shared these pictures, it stirred controversy as a section of social media users deemed it against Hindu culture and obscene. Hashtags such as #Sabyasachi_Insults_HinduCulture and #BoycottSabyasachi were trending on Twitter.
