The Odisha government has decided to give temporary permits to vehicles over 15 years old. The news comes as a relief for vehicle owners who have had their vehicles for over 15 years. The re-registering of vehicles that are older than 15 years is going to stop from April 1, 2023, under the vehicle Scrappage policy of the Centre.
The State government has decided to issue temporary permits for a period of four months to such vehicles under clause (d) of sub-section (1) of section 87 of the Motor Vehicle Act. The State Commerce and Transport department has written to the State Transport Authority (STA) and Regional Transport Authorities (RTAs) in this regard.
“As provided under clause (d) of sub-section (1) of section 87 of the Act, STA and RTAs without following the procedure laid down in section 80, may grant permits to be effective for a limited period which shall not, in any case, exceed four months at a time pending decision on an application for renewal of a permit and may attach to any such permit such condition as it may think fit,” Commerce & Transport department Joint Secretary, Kishore Chandra Das Das said in a letter.
