The entire music fraternity is still not over the demise of the legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar and the news of the demise of Sandhya Mukhopadhyay has struck us again. The previous month , Sandhya Mukhopadhyay refused Padma Shri from the Central Government. She was keeping unwell as she was diagnosed with Covid 19. The singer was already suffering from ischemic heart disease and later died of an massive heart attack . The medical team tried their best to revive her but this iconic singer could not be saved. The singer received Banga Bibhusan . Banga Bibhusan is the higest civilian honour in the state of West Bengal.
Some of the songs that still strike a chord in our heart are “A poth jodi na Sesh hoy “, ” Tose Naina Lage re Sawariya”, “”Udaasiyon Me Nazar Kho Gai” etc. Sandhya Mukhopadhyay also joined the mass movement during the Bangladesh Liberation War.The singer was classically trained but she was not limited to just classical music. She poured in melody into a lot of modern Hindi and Bengali songs. She was born in Dhakuria , Kolkata on October 4th 1931. She was the youngest of six children.
While mourning for the Singer’s demise , Mamata Banerjee – Chief Minister of West Bengal said “She had recovered from Covid-19 and was stable. Yesterday her condition deteriorated but we hadn’t thought that she would pass away. She led a very disciplined life. Today we have lost a legend.” Mamata Banerjee also told the late singer would be cremated with state honour and she would cut short her trip from North Bengal to reach Kolkata for the last rites.
