Advancing Sea Eroding 25% Of Odisha’s Coastline

Approximately 25.6% of Odisha’s coastline, which stretches up to 140.7 kilometers, is being eroded and beaten by powerful waves. In a written response to the Lok Sabha on Monday, Union Forest and Climate Change Minister Kirti Vardhan Singh stated that 140.72 km (25.6%) of Odisha’s 549.50 km of coastline was prone to erosion. According to the National Center for Coastal Research (NCCR), 39.6% of India’s coastline is in a stable state, 26.8% is undergoing accretion (expanding), and 33.6% is experiencing erosion, the minister stated.

In addition to providing livelihood security to the fishing communities and other local communities in the coastal areas, the Ministry of Environment, Forests, and Climate Change (MoEFCC) has issued Coastal Regulation Zone Notifications with the goal of conserving and protecting the distinctive environment of coastal stretches and marine areas. The Ministry has instructed the Union Territories and Coastal States to include the Shoreline Management Plan in the CZMP. The National Center for Sustainable Coastal Management (NCSCM), a division of the MoEFCC and NCCR, assists coastal states with the creation of Shoreline Management Plans and offers technical assistance for the implementation of coastal protection measures at critical areas.
