Passengers aboard Air India flight AI2379 from Phuket to Delhi experienced moments of terror after the aircraft encountered severe clear-air turbulence, causing it to briefly lose nearly 300 feet in altitude during cruise. The sudden drop threw unrestrained passengers and cabin crew into the air, leaving 17 people injured, including 13 passengers and four crew members.
Eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes inside the cabin, with passengers hitting overhead compartments, luggage being tossed around, and several people suffering head and facial injuries. The aircraft, however, remained under control and landed safely at Indira Gandhi International Airport, Delhi, where medical teams were waiting to assist the injured.
Air India confirmed that all injured passengers received immediate medical attention, while the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has launched an investigation into the incident. The airline said it is extending full support to affected passengers and is cooperating with aviation authorities.
The incident has once again highlighted the unpredictable nature of clear-air turbulence, which often occurs without visible storm clouds and can pose serious risks when passengers and crew are not securely fastened. Aviation experts continue to advise travelers to keep their seatbelts fastened whenever seated, even when the seatbelt sign is switched off.
