RIR Power Electronics is moving closer to commercial semiconductor production at its upcoming facility in Bhubaneswar, with the company completing the installation of key equipment for manufacturing Silicon Carbide (SiC) epitaxial wafers. The ₹618-crore project, being developed at the Electronic Manufacturing Cluster in Info Valley-II, is now at an advanced stage of completion.
The company has completed the erection and installation of state-of-the-art SiC epitaxial wafer manufacturing reactors, which are among the critical pieces of equipment required for the production process. Essential power connections, utilities and supporting infrastructure have also been commissioned, bringing the facility closer to becoming operational.
According to the latest update, commercial production is expected to begin within about three months, subject to the completion of the remaining statutory and regulatory formalities. Once operational, the facility is expected to manufacture SiC epitaxial wafers for both domestic and international markets.
The Bhubaneswar project is being developed as a vertically integrated SiC semiconductor manufacturing facility. The broader investment is aimed at building capabilities across the SiC value chain, including advanced power semiconductor devices such as high-power MOSFETs, diodes and modules. These technologies have applications across sectors including electric mobility, renewable energy, industrial automation, railways and other high-power electronics applications.
Silicon Carbide is increasingly being used in high-power electronic systems because it can offer higher efficiency and lower energy losses compared with conventional silicon-based technologies in suitable applications. Its properties also make it relevant for demanding applications involving high voltage, temperature and power density.
For Odisha, the project represents another step in the development of a semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem in the state. The Odisha government has provided fiscal support for Phase I of the project, which has a total planned investment of approximately ₹618 crore across its two phases.
With major equipment and supporting infrastructure now in place, RIR Power Electronics’ Bhubaneswar facility is entering the final phase before production. The start of commercial operations would mark a significant milestone for the company as it expands into SiC semiconductor manufacturing and for Odisha’s growing ambitions in advanced electronics and semiconductor production.
