Seven government health institutes in Odisha have been recognized by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) for postgraduate medical education, resulting in the creation of 17 new diploma and DNB seats in the fields of pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, anesthesiology, and medicine. With two seats apiece, five district headquarters hospitals—Jagatsinghpur, Jeypore (Koraput), Phulbani (Kandhamal), Dhenkanal, and Rayagada—have been recognized for the Diploma in Pediatrics, bringing the total to ten.
Additionally, the district headquarters hospitals in Jagatsinghpur and Angul have been awarded two and one seats, respectively, for the Diploma in Obstetrics and Gynecology programs. Additionally, four DNB seats in anesthesiology and medicine have been awarded to Shaheed Laxman Nayak Medical College and Hospital in Koraput. It is anticipated that the recognition will improve healthcare delivery, especially in isolated and difficult-to-reach parts of the state, and increase chances for specialized medical training at district-level hospitals.
The development of government hospitals as hubs for high-quality medical education and training is a top goal for the Odisha government, according to Health and Family Welfare Minister Mukesh Mahaling. He said that the NBEMS recognition would improve the state’s healthcare system and produce more specialized physicians. Mahaling expressed gratitude to the relevant medical facilities, physicians, nurses, and healthcare professionals for the accomplishment and asked for ongoing collaboration to improve medical education and healthcare in Odisha.
