Barricades are torn down by police as they enter UCLA campus and arrest hundreds of pro-Palestinian demonstrators.

To suppress the anti-Israel protests, law enforcement officials are said to have surged into the University of California, Los Angeles encampment site.On Thursday, May 2, California Highway Patrol officers arrested scores of protestors who were attempting to fortify the roadblock while police officers wearing protective gear tried to breach it. Police arranged buses in a parking lot for detained protestors. At first, the barricades outside the UCLA campsite were destroyed by officials. Officers in police riot gear, including zip ties, gas masks and helmets, were observed from the California Highway Patrol’s special operations team. They were observed preparing their batons before they entered the university. While being arrested, a few demonstrators were observed bowing down and having their arms zip-tied behind their backs.

Prior to this, UCLA sent out a safety alert advising students to stay away from Dickson Plaza, the location of the pro-Palestinian protesters’ camp. Because of an unauthorised assembly, Dickson Plaza has been ordered to be evacuated by police. UCLA has “declared the encampment and all unauthorised tents and structures in Dickson Plaza to be unlawful,” the advisory said, adding, “DO NOT re-enter the area of Dickson Plaza & follow the direction of public safety personnel.”

Regardless of why you want to stay, you will be breaking the law if you don’t leave and stay in the encampment or any unapproved tents or buildings in Dickson Plaza. Those who choose to stay may also face consequences. Students may be subject to disciplinary actions such as temporary suspension, which may result in dismissal after the necessary due process as outlined in the student conduct procedure.
