FEATURE: In the heartland of Odisha, where lush green landscapes meet mineral-rich soil, the story of Dr. Fakir Mohan Naik unfolds—a journey that weaves together resilience, service, and an unrelenting commitment to his people. From his humble beginnings in the Ghasipura constituency to reshaping the political fabric of Odisha, Dr. Naik’s journey is a powerful narrative of perseverance, vision, and an unyielding commitment to uplifting his people.
Born and raised in Ghasipura, Odisha, Dr. Fakir Mohan Naik’s early life was shaped by discipline and a keen sense of duty. He completed his schooling at Sainik School Bhubaneswar in 1992, an institution known for instilling leadership and commitment to service. With a bright academic future ahead, he initially pursued electrical engineering at Motilal Nehru Regional Engineering College (MNREC), now known as MNNIT Allahabad. However, financial constraints and family responsibilities forced him to change paths. Undeterred, Dr. Naik redirected his efforts toward medicine. He appeared for the medical entrance examination the following year, securing admission to Maharaja Krishna Chandra Gajapati (MKCG) Medical College in Berhampur. It was here that he found his true calling—to heal, to serve, and to bridge the gap between privilege and deprivation.
Dr. Naik’s medical career began in 2001 at the Basudevpur Community Health Centre (CHC). Over the next two decades, he served in various remote locations, including Joda, Barbil, and Telkoi—regions that, despite their mineral wealth, remained plagued by poverty and lack of basic amenities. Joda, where he was initially posted, presented him with stark realities. Despite being a land of abundant natural resources, the local population lived in severe deprivation. “People think Joda is a land of riches because of its minerals, but the truth on the ground is different. Around 80-90% of the local population struggled for basic needs,” he recalls. The region lacked proper healthcare infrastructure, and when Dr. Naik arrived, he was the sole government-appointed doctor with no supporting staff, no ASHA workers, and an overwhelming number of patients needing medical attention.
One particular health camp became a turning point in his life. “I saw firsthand how the local people were suffering—malnutrition, inadequate healthcare, lack of food security—while outsiders thrived on business opportunities in the region,” he says. This realization stirred a deep resolve within him: he needed to serve his people beyond the four walls of a hospital.
Dr. Naik recognized that true change required systemic intervention. Healthcare alone could not uplift an entire region; policy, governance, and representation were crucial. In 2009, driven by this conviction, he sought a parliamentary ticket to contest as an MP from Keonjhar. Unable to secure a party ticket, he ran as an independent candidate, garnering 32,500 votes without any major political backing—a testament to the people’s faith in him. This near-victory cemented his belief that politics was his new battlefield. He made subsequent attempts in 2014 and 2019 but faced challenges in securing party endorsement. However, his resolve never wavered. In 2024, he pivoted from parliamentary aspirations to state governance, contesting for the Telkoi Legislative Assembly seat—and this time, he won.
Dr. Naik’s tenure as an MLA is rooted in addressing the fundamental issues plaguing Telkoi. He envisions establishing cold storage facilities and a rice mill to support local farmers and reduce post-harvest losses. He also advocates for the steel plant announced by the Odisha Chief Minister to be set up in Telkoi, which could create employment for 10,000-15,000 people. Recognizing the potential of Telkoi’s natural beauty, he is determined to promote eco-tourism to boost the local economy. In the educational sector, he plans to set up new Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and focus on women’s education to bridge the literacy gap. Strengthening healthcare infrastructure remains a top priority, ensuring that every village has access to medical facilities and trained professionals.
“There is an information gap in our villages. Many people are unaware of the government schemes designed to uplift them. I am mobilizing my party workers to go door-to-door, educating families about their rights and the benefits they can access,” he says with determination.
Despite his transition into politics, Dr. Naik has never abandoned his role as a doctor. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he remained on the front lines, treating patients in Barbil and later in Telkoi. In the first wave, he contracted the virus himself but recovered and continued his medical services. The people of Telkoi, moved by his dedication, embraced him not just as a leader but as one of their own. His wife, a nursing professional, has been his pillar of strength through the years. “She believed in me even when I failed multiple times in my political journey. She kept telling me, ‘Keep trying. One day, things will fall into place,’” he shares.
Dr. Naik is particularly passionate about inspiring the youth to take charge of their future. “Young people must decide what development their region needs. They should be aware, proactive, and engaged in decision-making. The future of Odisha is in their hands,” he asserts. With Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, and Odisha’s Vikasit Gaon, Vikasit Odisha initiative, Dr. Naik is optimistic about the state’s transformation by 2036. His goal is to see Odisha as a developed state and India as a global powerhouse by 2047, the centenary of India’s independence.
Dr. Fakir Mohan Naik’s journey—from an aspiring engineer to a dedicated doctor, and now a committed political leader—exemplifies perseverance, selfless service, and an unbreakable bond with his motherland. His story is not just one of personal triumph but a beacon of hope for many, proving that true leadership is not about power, but about service. As he continues to bridge the gap between governance and grassroots realities, Dr. Naik stands as a testament to the transformative power of resilience and unwavering dedication. His journey, deeply intertwined with the people he serves, is far from over—it is only just beginning.
