The historic DAKOTA (DC-3) VT-AUI aircraft, which was previously a favorite of Odisha’s former Chief Minister Biju Patnaik and was now gathering dust at Kolkata’s Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International (NSCBI) Airport, will now make its journey to Odisha. The necessary procedures for transporting this aircraft have already begun. Debadutta Suranjita Jena, additional secretary to the Odisha government, has asked the Additional DG of Police to coordinate with the West Bengal Police for the safe transportation of the aircraft from the NSCBI Airport exit gate to the West Bengal border and from the border to the Biju Patnaik International Airport in Bhubaneswar.
The State government has tasked M/S Aerospace Research & Development Centre, Bhubaneswar with dismantling, packaging, and transporting the aircraft from Kolkata to Bhubaneswar, according to the letter. In addition, the service provider will restore, reassemble, and renovate the BPIA in Bhubaneswar. The service provider was requested in the letter to finish the disassembly work by January 10. As a result, it is considered that the aircraft has already been dismantled by this point.
The disassembled aircraft will be transported by road to Odisha on January 12. West Bengal Police would give escort from the NSCBI Airport exit gate to the State boundary, where Odisha Police will accompany it up to the BPI Airport on January 12.
