Veteran actor and filmmaker Manoj Kumar, renowned for his patriotic films, passed away at the age of 87 in Mumbai. He breathed his last at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital at 4:03 am on Friday.
According to medical reports, Manoj Kumar succumbed to cardiogenic shock caused by acute myocardial infarction, a severe heart attack. He had also been battling decompensated liver cirrhosis in recent months, which had worsened his health. The actor was admitted to the hospital on February 21, 2025, after his condition deteriorated.
His mortal remains will be kept at his Juhu residence on Friday afternoon for industry colleagues and fans to pay their final respects. The cremation is expected to take place on Saturday.
Filmmaker Ashoke Pandit expressed grief over his demise, stating, “Sad to inform you all that the legendary Dadasaheb Phalke award winner, our inspiration, and the ‘lion’ of the Indian film industry, Manoj Kumar Ji, is no more. The entire industry will miss him. He was always full of life and happiness. A great soul like him, a great maker like him, will never be there again.”
Born Harikrishan Goswami on July 24, 1937, in Amritsar, Punjab, Manoj Kumar became an icon in Hindi cinema with films that celebrated patriotism. His powerful performances in classics such as Shaheed (1965), Upkar (1967), Purab Aur Paschim (1970), and Roti Kapda Aur Makaan (1974) earned him the title ‘Bharat Kumar.’
Throughout his illustrious career, he was honored with numerous accolades, including the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award. His contributions to Indian cinema will remain unforgettable, leaving behind a legacy of films that continue to inspire generations.
