The Information & Broadcasting (I&B) Ministry has blocked 18 OTT sites that distribute vulgar, filthy, and occasionally pornographic content by working with several intermediaries. An official release said that 19 websites, 10 applications (7 available on the Google Play Store and 3 on the Apple App Store), and 57 social media profiles linked to these platforms have all been blocked from public access in India.
Notably, Anurag Singh Thakur, Minister of Information and Broadcasting, has frequently emphasized that platforms need to refrain from disseminating abuse, vulgarity, and obscenity while claiming that such content is part of “creative expression.” He declared on March 12 that 18 OTT platforms that were hosting filthy and offensive content had been removed.
The latest decision was made by the Information Technology Act, of 2000, after consulting with specialists in the fields of media and entertainment, women’s rights, and child rights, as well as other Ministries and Departments of the Government of India.
