Delhi drama day takes on a new twist thanks to a Centre ordinance to retake government control

After Kejriwal said there were rumours the Union government would introduce an ordinance to overturn the May 11 judgement, the action was taken shortly after. The ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) said on Friday that a measure taken by the Centre to regain control over Delhi’s officers is a violation of a recent Supreme Court ruling that gave the elected government the authority to appoint bureaucrats in all but a small number of departments.Later, Atishi, the minister of education, claimed that the regulation had violated the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court Constitution bench explicitly decided that the elected government should have the authority to make decisions (on services problems), and the Center’s ordinance is in flagrant violation of that ruling.

“The central government has snatched the powers on services matters given to the elected government of Delhi by the Constitution bench of the Supreme Court. The people of Delhi elected Arvind Kejriwal for the third time, but the Centre is saying that the imposed lieutenant governor will have the rights of transfer and posting, and through it he will have authority over every work. This is contempt and insult to the Supreme Court,” Delhi services minister Saurabh Bharadwaj said.

Abhishek Singhvi, a senior member of the Congress, opposed the ordinance while speaking on behalf of the Delhi government before the Supreme Court. “It is obvious that this is the behaviour of a lousy, ungrateful loser. It is doubtful that ordinances or acts might weaken constitutional principles. There is greater scepticism about whether the entire Parliament will support it, he continued.
