Dr. Kadambini Ganguly – The Beacon of Light

By Riddhima Sen

Kadambini Ganguly was one of the first female doctors from Bengal. Rather, she was the first female doctor from Bengal. She was born on 18th July, 1861. Despite coming from an upper caste Bengali community, she pursued education of a higher extent. She received her initial education at Brahmo Eden Female School, Dacca. Subsequently, she received education at Hindu Mahila Vidyalaya, Ballygunj Calcutta. In 1878, she became the first woman to pass the University of Calcutta entrance examination. She passed the FA exam in 1880. Along with Chandramukhi Basu, she became the first graduate from Bethune College.

Kadambini Ganguly married Dwarakanath Ganguly on 12 June, 1883. With her husband’s undulated support, she could pursue further education. In order to pursue higher education, she needed support. Given the social situation at that particular point of time, women couldn’t pursue education without the help of their fathers or husbands. Her sheer determination to rise way above her social circumstances made her outshine women during her contemporary times, and eventually become an ideal for ambitious women. Her practicing dhatrividya, or the art of assisting in childbirth, simply described as a midwife received a lot of criticism but could not deter her from pursuing her dreams .
