Rejecting opposition’s claim about rise in crime against women in Odisha, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi asserted that the state government is taking stringent measures to contain such offences. Describing crime of any form against women as ‘unacceptable,’ the Chief Minister maintained that the overall crime rates in Odisha did not show any alarming rise since BJP formed government.
The Chief Minister noted that 48,789 incidents of crimes against women had been recorded in the last 18 months, which was about the same as the 48,787 cases reported during the previous BJD government, in response to the Assembly’s discussion on financial demands for the Home Department. Majhi highlighted a good trend in several areas, pointing out that dowry cases reduced by 26.1% and acid assaults decreased by 63.3%. In a similar vein, dowry fatalities and dacoity declined by 7.4% and 8%, respectively.
Additionally, the Chief Minister commended the police for saving 5,451 women and children in ten days. After falling from 9.2% in 2022 to 6.7% in 2023, the crime rate became the lowest in the nation. But he pointed out that the crime rate had increased to 41% in 2025 before reaching a peak of 62% in June of the same year.
The Chief Minister asserted that the police are no longer subject to political meddling, in contrast to the previous administration. Majhi reiterated the state government’s dedication to enhancing public safety and lowering crimes against women, citing ongoing efforts to combat cybercrimes and a strong anti-gangster campaign.
