Empowering Voices and Choices

An Exclusive Feature on Women Empowerment by Dr. Geetha Kariappa

As Eleanor Roosevelt noted, “Women, whether subtly or vociferously, have always been a tremendous power in the destiny of the world.”

Empowerment for a woman starts with having economic independence as the bedrock of her life. She makes her own decisions which comes from her sense of self-esteem and self-worth. She genuinely acts on the premise of her ability to contribute positively to the well-being of society with control over her life, her finances, and her rights.

I have personally seen a sea change happening in the life of my domestic woman helper, Parvathy. With the elevation in her economic stability, she is confident and better informed about investment opportunities, social welfare programs and health benefits floated by the government.

Parvathy knows how to operate a bank account. She has learnt basic reading and writing skills, counting, and signing her name. I feel very proud of the distance she has travelled. because she was married off at a young age and had 2 children soon after. When she joined my household, she was suffering from anaemia, low nutrition, and low confidence. She became a very good student who listened to my advice and practised what she learnt.

Today, Parvathy has educated and married off her daughter. Her son is a computer science graduate and earns a good salary. She is guiding her daughter to have her business in tailoring from home. Parvathy is a secretary in the women’s self-group too.

I heard her advising her friend that she could borrow money from their self-help registered body and pay back the money in easy instalments. She suggested she start her business by serving home-cooked meals to the office-goers. Her entrepreneurial venture suggestion highlights how confident women generate solutions, and mentors to uplift others. They do create a ripple effect, fostering an equitable society. I strongly believe that financial stability is more than money; it’s about empowerment of self.
