Empowering Women, Enriching Communities: Mrs. Monalisha Pallai

Founder, Angelina Enterprises

Feature: When Mrs. Monalisha Pallai founded Angelina Enterprises, it was not just about starting a business – it was about creating a movement of empowerment, opportunity, and self-reliance. What began as a small idea in 2008 with just one incense stick machine and no financial backing has today grown into a pioneering enterprise that is reshaping the entrepreneurial landscape of Odisha and beyond.

Born out of a deep concern for the lack of employment opportunities in Odisha, especially for women, Mrs. Pallai’s journey reflects both courage and vision. “I had no money, no backing, and no clear roadmap,” she recalls. “But I had the fire inside me to do something—not just for myself, but for society, and especially for women.”

With limited capital at hand, Mrs. Pallai bought her first incense stick machine and began making and selling agarbatti in the local market. It was tough. Financial struggles, lack of sponsorship, and the absence of raw materials made the initial years extremely challenging. Marketing and pricing hurdles forced her to sell on credit for nearly a year, incurring heavy losses. Yet, she refused to give up. Her turning point came with the realization that agarbatti-making was not only a sustainable small-scale business but also an accessible skill that women could learn and practice from the comfort of their homes. She decided to expand her vision—rather than being only a producer, she would provide agarbatti-making machines to women and entrepreneurs across Western Odisha, enabling them to become self-reliant.

From a single machine in 2008, Angelina Enterprises was officially registered in 2012. The company gradually diversified into supplying machines for agarbatti, papad, and paper plates—covering a wide spectrum of MSME needs. Today, Angelina Enterprises caters to both small-scale and large-scale industries, becoming a trusted partner for thousands of entrepreneurs. What makes Angelina Enterprises unique is its handholding approach—not just supplying machines, but also training individuals, connecting them with markets, and ensuring that what they produce finds its way to buyers. This ecosystem has directly impacted thousands of women, giving them financial independence and dignity.

Initially focused on Western Odisha—particularly the underdeveloped KBK region—the company has now spread across the state. With its head office in Bhubaneswar, branches in Kalahandi, Bargarh, and a stock point in Sundargarh, Angelina Enterprises is steadily building a presence across districts, aiming to reduce the dependency on Bhubaneswar as the only hotspot for opportunities. Today, Mrs. Pallai proudly leads a business with a client base of over 50,000, a remarkable achievement for someone who started with no financial resources.

The journey has not gone unnoticed. Mrs. Pallai was honored with the Best Business Award by former Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, a recognition she treasures deeply. “To be acknowledged at that level is a huge achievement for me because it showed how much the people of Odisha trusted me and my work. The biggest award will always be the trust and support of my customers,” she says with humility.

At the heart of Angelina Enterprises lies Mrs. Pallai’s commitment to women empowerment. Her decision to begin with agarbatti was deliberate—an activity simple to learn, possible from home, and accessible to rural women. Today, her enterprise ensures that every woman who partners with Angelina Enterprises is not only trained but also supported in marketing and selling their products. Her message to women is powerful and clear: “Never think anything is impossible. Everything says ‘I’m possible’. Don’t listen to the noise around you—believe in yourself, keep moving forward. The government has so many schemes for women entrepreneurs; we just need to be aware and take advantage of them. Once a woman becomes financially independent, she can empower many others around her.”

Angelina Enterprises also works to bridge the gap between government policy and ground-level implementation. By organizing awareness programs across districts, Mrs. Pallai and her team educate people about opportunities, schemes, and entrepreneurial pathways. For her, knowledge is power, and she makes it a priority to ensure that every person who joins her initiative is aware, motivated, and encouraged to step beyond their comfort zone.

Looking ahead, Mrs. Pallai envisions taking Angelina Enterprises to a PAN-India level while ensuring that every district of Odisha has a branch office. This decentralization would allow entrepreneurs to access opportunities without having to migrate to bigger cities. Her dream is simple yet transformative—to make every woman feel empowered, financially independent, and confident to stand on her own. Challenges will come, but every problem has a solution. With hard work, self-belief, and courage, nothing is out of reach.

From a small incense stick machine to an enterprise with thousands of clients and multiple branches, Mrs. Monalisha Pallai’s journey with Angelina Enterprises is an inspiring story of resilience, empowerment, and vision. She chose the unconventional path, and in doing so, not only carved her own destiny but also opened doors for countless others—especially women—across Odisha. Her story is proof that when determination meets purpose, even the humblest beginnings can lead to extraordinary impact.
