The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) made history by announcing the long-overdue equal pay policy for male and female cricketers. The action done by BCCI would aid in encouraging gender equality among sports fans.
“I’m thrilled to announce @BCCI’s first move towards combating discrimination,” BCCI Honorary Secretary Jay Shah tweeted. We are putting into effect a pay equity policy for the @BCCIWomen cricketers we have contracted. As we enter a new era of gender equality in cricket, the match price will be the same for male and women players.
According to their bracket cap, the centrally contracted female athletes will receive pay on par with that of their male counterparts. The recently implemented system would also compensate female players with equal match payments of Rs. 15 lakh for Tests, Rs. 6 lakh for ODIs, and Rs. 3 lakh for T20 Internationals.
Across India, pay inequality has long been a problem in all industries. Many instances of salary disparities between male and female actors in the entertainment industry have already made headlines, but little has been done in this area. The BCCI’s recent announcement is undoubtedly a start toward a better future and a light at the end of a long tunnel.
“This is a historic move for women’s cricket in India,” said Mithali Raj, a former Indian captain and a legend in women’s cricket, in response to the happy news. “With the pay equity policy and the WIPL next year, we are ushering in a new era for women’s cricket in India.”
