Former US National Security Advisor (NSA) Jake Sullivan has accused Donald Trump of undermining Washington’s strategic partnership with India in favor of his family’s business deals with Pakistan.
In an interview with the MeidasTouch YouTube channel, Sullivan described Trump’s shift towards closer ties with Islamabad as “one of the more under-reported stories” of his foreign policy. He warned that this move caused “huge strategic harm” to US interests.
For decades, the US has built bipartisan ties with India — the world’s largest democracy — on shared values and cooperation in technology, economics, and countering China. Sullivan argued that Trump “threw the India relationship over the side” due to Pakistan’s willingness to engage in business ventures with his family.
He added that the fallout goes beyond South Asia, as allies like Germany, Japan, and Canada may now see the US as unreliable. “Our word should be our bond. What’s happening with India has direct impacts, but also reverberating effects across all our partnerships worldwide,” he said.
The comments come amid reports of the Trump family’s involvement in WLF, a blockchain and cryptocurrency platform with a 60% stake held by Trump and his affiliates. The company signed a deal with Pakistan in 2024, with senior Pakistani and American representatives present.
Following high-level meetings, Trump announced a trade agreement with Islamabad in July, pledging US assistance in developing Pakistan’s oil reserves. At the same time, he threatened to impose 25% tariffs on Indian goods, signaling a shift in Washington’s South Asia policy.
Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif hailed the deal as “historic,” while Israel, India, and other traditional allies have grown increasingly wary of America’s commitments under Trump’s leadership.
