The ruling BJP party in both Maharashtra and Karnataka is in a precarious position as a result of the latest consequences from the long-running border dispute. Devendra Fadnavis, the deputy chief minister of Maharashtra, and Basavaraj Bommai, the chief minister of Karnataka, have been sparring over the past several days.On Wednesday, Fadnavis vowed that no village from Maharashtra will relocate, to which Bommai responded that the statement was “provocative” and that “his dream will never come true.”
He continued by saying that Karnataka demands that regions with a large population of Kannada speakers, such Solapur in Maharashtra, be included in Karnataka. Bommai had before asserted that some village panchayats in Maharashtra’s Sangli district had previously passed a resolution calling for a union with Karnataka while they were experiencing a water shortage. He stated that the Karnataka government has prepared assistance plans for them and that his government was carefully evaluating their request for a merger. In response to inquiries regarding the remarks made by the chief minister of Karnataka, Fadnavis stated that although these communities had voted a resolution on the water crisis back in 2012, there had been no current advancements.
Soon after, Bommai announced that the State has assembled a formidable team of attorneys, including Mukul Rohatgi and Shyam Diwan, to defend its position. According to Bommai, the Maharashtra government has brought a lawsuit to the Supreme Court about the boundary problem since 2004. “They haven’t succeeded thus far, and they won’t succeed going forward either. We are prepared to intensify our legal defence.”Fadnavis released a video of himself telling reporters on Twitter, saying, “No village in Maharashtra would migrate to Karnataka! The state administration would vigorously advocate for Marathi-speaking villages, such as Belgaum, Karwar, and Nipani, in the Supreme Court!
