Imphal, August 25, 2026: Fresh violence has erupted in Senapati district of Manipur, with several houses reportedly burned or damaged and a CRPF personnel injured in firing. The latest violence has raised fresh concerns over tensions between communities in the Senapati-Kangpokpi region.
According to reports, violence began in the early hours of Monday in and around Taphou, after a residential house in Taphou Kuki was reportedly set on fire. Further incidents of arson and damage were subsequently reported in nearby areas, including places inhabited by Naga residents.
The situation escalated later in the morning when firing was reported between unidentified armed individuals. A CRPF personnel deployed in the area sustained a firearm injury and was taken to Senapati District Hospital for treatment. Reports identified him as a member of the 36th CRPF unit.
Several houses were reportedly targeted. Authorities and local organisations have issued appeals against further violence and destruction. The Taphou Kuki Village Authority condemned the burning of a residential property and called for disputes to be addressed through peaceful and lawful means.
The latest incidents are particularly concerning because the area has been experiencing heightened tensions involving Naga and Kuki communities. The violence has also affected movement along National Highway-2, an important route connecting Imphal with Dimapur and other parts of the region. Reports said traffic was disrupted after protesters blocked parts of the highway.
Security forces have been deployed in Taphou and surrounding areas in Senapati and Kangpokpi districts to prevent the situation from spreading. Officials are continuing to investigate the exact circumstances and those responsible for the incidents.
The renewed violence comes after years of conflict and instability in Manipur. The latest clashes underline how fragile the security situation remains in some parts of the state, even as authorities attempt to restore normal movement and reduce tensions.
