A fresh diplomatic confrontation has emerged between India and Pakistan after a Pakistani naval vessel collided with an Indian Navy warship in the northern Arabian Sea on September 15. India has formally protested the incident and summoned Pakistan’s top diplomatic representative in New Delhi.
According to Indian government statements and reports from Reuters, AP and The Indian Express, the incident occurred in international waters roughly 120 nautical miles from the Gulf of Oman. The Pakistani vessel involved was identified as PNS Hunain, while the Indian Navy ship was reportedly carrying out a routine surveillance mission.
Indian officials said the Pakistani ship approached the Indian vessel at high speed and manoeuvred in a manner described by the Ministry of External Affairs as “unacceptable and unprofessional.” The Indian Navy vessel reportedly suffered no damage and continued its mission, while PNS Hunain sustained damage in the collision.
The incident is particularly significant because it comes against the backdrop of already strained India-Pakistan relations. The two countries have historically maintained a substantial military presence in the Arabian Sea, and the region is strategically important because of its proximity to major international shipping routes and the Gulf of Oman.
India has asked Pakistan to ensure that its military units exercise appropriate caution at sea and follow existing bilateral understandings designed to prevent dangerous encounters. India’s diplomatic representative in Islamabad has also been instructed to raise the issue with Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry.
As of the latest reports, Pakistan had not issued an immediate public response to India’s diplomatic protest. There have also been no reports of casualties from the collision.
The incident is attracting considerable attention because even a relatively minor maritime collision involving the armed forces of two nuclear-armed neighbours can have wider diplomatic implications. The immediate focus will now be on how both sides investigate the incident and whether further diplomatic communication follows.
