A 51-year-old Indian-origin man, Vijay Kumar, has been taken into police custody in Gwinnett County, Georgia, USA, following the deadly shooting of his wife and three other relatives, authorities said.
The incident unfolded in the early hours of Friday at a residence on Brook Ivy Court in Lawrenceville, where Kumar and his wife, 43-year-old Meemu Dogra, reportedly drove with their 12-year-old child after a disagreement at their Atlanta home.
When officers responded to a 911 call placed by the couple’s child, they discovered four adults had died from gunshot wounds inside the house. Alongside Dogra, the victims were identified as Gourav Kumar (33), Nidhi Chander (37) and Harish Chander (38) — all relatives and residents of the same home.
Three children present during the shooting hid in a closet and escaped unharmed. The 12-year-old made the emergency call that brought police to the scene, officials said.
Kumar was found a short distance away from the home and arrested. He now faces multiple serious charges, including counts of murder and aggravated assault, as well as charges related to cruelty to children. Police are continuing their investigation into the exact motive, which they say appears linked to a family dispute, but have not yet released further details.
India’s Consulate in Atlanta has acknowledged the tragedy and stated that support is being provided to the bereaved family.
