On Saturday, Justice Uday Umesh Lalit, the 49th Chief Justice of India, took the oath of office. President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath to him at a ceremony today at 10.30 a.m. at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. Justice Lalit assumes leadership of the court one day after Justice N V Ramana, the previous justice, resigned. Having become an advocate in June 1983, Justice Lalit, who was born on November 9th, 1957, worked in the Bombay High Court until December 1985. He relocated his practise to Delhi in January 1986, and the Supreme Court appointed him a senior advocate in April 2004. He was chosen to represent the CBI as the special public prosecutor in the case involving the allocation of 2G spectrum.

As a member of the Supreme Court, Justice Lalit has contributed to several historic decisions and will preside over many important cases during his tenure.
