Kargil Vijay Diwas : Know About The Historic Day

July 26 is celebrated as the Kargil Vijay Diwas every year to honour the victory of India over Pakistan in the 1999 Kargil War. India on Tuesday, July 26, 2022, commemorated 23 years of its victory.

This day commemorates the sacrifice of Indian soldiers in a week-long war. On this day, every year the Prime Minister celebrates the soldiers of Amar Jawan Jyoti at the Indian Gate in New Delhi, and several events are held nationwide to celebrate the contribution of the Indian Army to the nation.

On the occasion of Kargil Vijay Diwas, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to the brave sons of the country, who have reached the pinnacle of courage to protect their homeland.

The Kargil War:

The relationship between the two neighbours who were previously engaged in the struggle in 1971, which led to the formation of Bangladesh, has remained tense in recent years. Although the two countries have little involvement in direct armed conflict, they have done their best to control the Siachen Glacier by establishing military outposts on the surrounding ridges.

Tensions increased after the two countries conducted a nuclear test in 1998. The Lahore Declaration was signed in February 1999 to overcome the situation. This statement promised a peaceful and bilateral solution to the Kashmir conflict. However, during the winter of 1998-1999, Pakistani troops secretly trained and dispatched troops to invade the Indian side of the Line of Control (LOC), and NH1A in Kargil’s Drass and Batalik sectors in the Ladakh region. The purpose, of everything, was to control the movement of the military and civilians.

However, they soon realized that the attack was planned on a much larger scale-the Indian side was forced to retaliate and mobilize more than 200,000 Indian troops in the region. The counter-mission was called “Operation Vijay”. Pakistani troops began the war by shooting down two Indian fighters.

The Indian Air Force has worked with the Indian Army to track down Pakistani invaders. With the Army and IAF already deployed, the Indian Navy also placed strategic pressure on Pakistan through Operation Talwar. The Navy actively patrols the Pakistani coast during the war. The powerful fighters of the Indian Air Force including Mirage 2000, MiG-29, MiG-21, and MiG-27 gave the Indian Army an advantage over the Pakistani invaders.

In the course of the war, Pakistan also demanded US intervention and urged then-President Bill Clinton to withdraw his troops from LoC. A total of 527 Indian Army soldiers died during the war. The war ended on July 26, 1999, when Pakistani troops expelled their troops from the occupied territories, demonstrating India’s victory. Since then, the day has been observed as the Kargil War Diwas to commemorate the highest sacrifice of soldiers.

Bollywood also represented the historical story of Kargil in films such as Border, LOC: Kargil, Lakshya, Shershaah, and Gunjan Saxena paying tribute to the brave heart of our country.
