On Tuesday, ‘Rasabali,’ the sweet provided as a ‘bhog’ (offering) to the gods at the Sri Baladevjew Temple in Kendrapara, received a Geographical Indication (GI) tag. ‘Kendrapara Rasabali Mistanna Nirmata Sangha’ and ‘Rural Infrastructure Development & Employment’ submitted an application to the Geographical Indications Registry in December 2021 asking for Geographical Indications for Kendrapara Rasabali (sweet) under Food Stuffs.
Today, Kendrapara Rasabali received the GI certificate from the Geographical Indications Registry. Researchers on food claim that Rasabali has been consumed as a sweet since King Anangabhima Deva’s reign in the middle ages. Up to 32 different types of “Rasabali” were being provided at the Sri Baladevjew Temple during his time.
The confection was once exclusively made inside the temples as a gift for the gods. However, it is now offered everywhere throughout Kendrapara and throughout most of Odisha.
The preparation of Rasabali is a complex process and is made of cheese, ghee, milk and green cardamom.
