The travel prohibition was lifted by a court ruling, and the Controller General of Immigration and Emigration was named as the beneficiary. They couldn’t leave the nation without the court’s consent according to a previous order from the Sri Lankan Supreme Court. Conflicts broke out as Sri Lankans struggled with severe shortages of basic supplies including food and fuel. Mahinda Rajapaksa, the country’s first minister, resigned as a result of the protests. President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, his brother, left the country and later announced his resignation. On July 20 of last year, parliament chose Wickremasinghe to take over as president in an interim capacity.
