Mallikarjun Kharge is set to become the new Congress president following a landslide victory in the party’s first election in more than 20 years.
Mr Kharge, widely regarded as the “Gandhi-approved” candidate, received 90% of the votes cast on Monday. He received 7,897 votes, while Shashi Tharoor received 1,072. Mr Kharge will be the Congress’s first non-Gandhi leader in 24 years.
Rahul Gandhi declared Mr Kharge the winner at a press conference in Andhra Pradesh before the results were announced.
Rahul Gandhi responded when asked if he would report to the new chief: “My role will be determined by the new president. Inquire with Kharge ji and Sonia ji.”
Sonia Gandhi agreed to temporarily lead the party when Rahul Gandhi stepped down three years ago, taking responsibility for the party’s two consecutive routs in the 2014 and 2019 general elections.
