Mumbai Rains: Police Urge Residents to Stay Indoors as City Remains on High Alert

Mumbai woke up to a relentless downpour on Friday, with continuous rain lashing several parts of the city. In response to the worsening weather conditions, Mumbai Police have urged residents to stay indoors and avoid coastal areas unless travel is absolutely necessary.

“Due to heavy rainfall in Mumbai and nearby districts, citizens are advised to remain indoors, steer clear of coastal zones, and drive cautiously,” read an advisory posted by the Mumbai Police on X (formerly Twitter). The department further assured that officials and emergency staff are on high alert, ready to assist, and can be reached by dialling 100 in case of emergencies.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, and Thane, indicating the likelihood of intense rainfall. Meanwhile, Palghar has been placed under a yellow alert, suggesting moderate weather activity but advising residents to remain cautious.

More severe weather conditions have been forecast for Raigad and Ratnagiri, where a red alert is in effect. These districts are expected to receive “heavy to very heavy rainfall” in some areas and extremely heavy showers in isolated pockets. A red alert has also been issued for the ghat regions of Satara and Pune.

According to IMD’s warning system:

  • Red alert means “take action” – severe weather is expected.

  • Orange alert means “be prepared” – dangerous weather is likely.

  • Yellow alert means “be aware” – less intense but caution is advised.

Residents are advised to follow official updates and take necessary precautions as the city grapples with monsoon fury.
