A top-notch zoo will be created at Nandankanan as a result of the 5T efforts. The Forest Department delivered a presentation today to Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik about the city’s Nandankanan Zoological Park’s total development. The Chief Minister granted approval, ordered a full ban on plastic usage in Nandankanan, and gave advice on how to finish the project within the allotted deadline. Notably, on May 23, at the assessment of the forest department, the CM gave the order to create a plan for the transformation of Nandankanan.

The updated design calls for the construction of new, upgraded visitor facilities, contemporary landscaping and façade, a tunnel aquarium, a water bird aviary with new foreign species, immersive enclosures, and environmental education for kids. The first part of the two-phase transformation program will be carried out from 2023 to 2025, and the second phase will be carried out from 2025 to 2028. The zoo and botanical garden will be created in the first phase, while the Chudang forest region will be developed in the second phase. It will create a safari complex and a night safari.

Plans exist to transform Nandankanan into a desirable center for kids’ nature education. It offers nature education, activity-based zoos, and initiatives like “Nandankanan Club” and “Zoo Ambassador” in select special schools. Along with this, additional activities like Know Your Trees and Citizen Science will be carried out. For kids, special initiatives like zoo volunteers and internships will be created.

It is important to note that Nandankanan is home to 30 species of reptiles, 6 species of amphibians, 48 species of mammals, and 77 species of birds. There are 4012 creatures in all, representing 161 species. The nation is currently preparing to import additional animals from various foreign locations. From the country’s northeastern area, it is suggested to bring Hoolock Gibbons, Pig-Tailed Macaques, One-Horned Rhinos, Capped Langurs, Spectacled Monkeys, Clouded Leopards, etc. Similar plans exist to import Australian species like the cassowary, kangaroo, wallaby, etc. Satyabrat Sahu, Additional Chief Secretary, Department of Forests and Environment, Development Commissioner Anu Garg, Chief Secretary PK Jena, Director of Nandankanan, and Satyabrat Garg attended this meeting.
