Nurturing Creativity, Building the Nation: Dr. Subrat Panigrahi

Principal, Saraswati Degree Vidya Mandir, NK Nagar, Berhampur

FEATURE: In a quiet corner of Berhampur’s NK Nagar, where modest homes stand as testaments to quiet ambition, a silent revolution in education has taken root—spearheaded by a man whose life is defined as much by humility as by vision. Dr. Subrat Panigrahi, the soft-spoken yet resolute Principal of Saraswati Vidya Mandir, does not fit the stereotype of a traditional institutional head. Yet, over the past three decades, he has redefined what it means to lead with purpose and conviction.

“I started teaching at 24,” he says, his voice steady with the quiet certainty of a man who has built not just a career but a cause. Now 55, his journey is one of not just professional evolution, but of deep transformation—of students, communities, and perceptions surrounding Odia-medium education.

His teaching journey began not in Odisha but in the highly competitive coaching institutes of Andhra Pradesh. With a postgraduate degree in chemistry and early research experience at Indian Rare Earths Limited in Chhatrapur, Dr. Panigrahi could have easily pursued a career in science or research. But the classroom, with its raw potential and real-time impact, called louder than the laboratory. He soon joined Nalco’s Delhi Public School at Damanjodi as a Post Graduate Teacher, where he discovered the power of a single moment of encouragement—the spark of understanding in a student’s eyes.

His most defining decision, however, came in 2007, when he left lucrative offers from elite institutions to join Saraswati Vidya Mandir in Berhampur. At the time, the school was viewed as a last resort—its identity tied to its Odia-medium instruction and a clientele of children from farming and working-class families. “Parents hesitated,” he recalls. “There was a stigma that Odia-medium schools couldn’t produce successful students.” But for Dr. Panigrahi, it wasn’t a career move—it was a mission.

His first reform was revolutionary in its simplicity: launching Plus Two Science courses in Odia with integrated NEET and JEE coaching. What was once dismissed as a non-competitive school soon began outperforming many of Odisha’s top institutions. By 2012, Saraswati Vidya Mandir had transformed into a hub for engineering and medical aspirants, attracting students from Odisha and neighboring states like Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and Andhra Pradesh.

Today, the school’s faculty comprises passionate educators from prestigious institutions including the IITs. “They’re not here for the salary,” says Dr. Panigrahi. “They’re here because they believe in the cause. Love for teaching defines our culture.”

At a time when families spend lakhs to send children to coaching hubs in Bhubaneswar or Hyderabad, Saraswati Vidya Mandir delivers comparable—if not superior—results at a fraction of the cost. Students from tribal, SC/ST, and economically disadvantaged backgrounds are offered full scholarships and complete academic support. In 2024 alone, 147 students secured MBBS seats, while 80 scored above the 90th percentile in JEE Main—two of them earning a perfect 100 in Physics. In total, the institution has produced more than 1,000 MBBS doctors and over 200 IIT/NIT technocrats within just 12 years.

But Saraswati is not a school obsessed with marks. “Education must build character,” says Dr. Panigrahi. Every day begins with a 10-minute prayer followed by motivational storytelling. Mobile phones are banned, classrooms are equipped with CCTV, and the entire environment is structured to cultivate discipline, focus, and moral values. Remarkably, students from CBSE and ICSE backgrounds are now opting for this Odia-medium stream—drawn by its culture of excellence, affordability, and discipline.

For Dr. Panigrahi, leadership is about trust, not authority. “The real heroes are our teachers,” he insists. His empowering leadership has created a rare stability in the academic world, where most educators stay for 8 to 10 years or more. Regular faculty training, digital classrooms, modern science labs, and air-conditioned facilities have transformed the school into a full-fledged learning ecosystem.

Born into a humble family in Berhampur, Dr. Panigrahi knows struggle firsthand. He recalls his own financial hardships as a student and the resilience they instilled in him. “That’s what we teach here—poverty can’t stop you if your intent is strong.”

His mission is clear—to provide the best quality education to the underprivileged mass of the society. What was once seen as a low-profile Odia-medium school has now transformed into an “educational pilgrimage” of Odisha—an institution that is affordable, accessible, and aspirational. Saraswati Vidya Mandir today has students from 30 districts and five different states.

From nursery to graduation, Saraswati Degree Vidya Mandir now offers a seamless educational journey, with dedicated mentors for every academic level. “I personally supervise Plus Two and Degree students,” he says. “And I still teach chemistry whenever I can. That’s where my heart lies.”

As Saraswati continues to produce university toppers, earn statewide acclaim, and draw national attention, Dr. Panigrahi remains steadfast in his mission. “No student should be denied a dream because of money,” he says.

To his students, his message is simple yet profound: “Don’t just dream—act. Stay honest, stay sincere. I’ve walked the same path you’re on. If I could rise through struggle, so can you.”

In the calm corridors of Saraswati Vidya Mandir, beyond the hum of classrooms and the morning prayers, echoes the quiet strength of a man who has turned belief into impact—a legacy of transformation rooted in education, humility, and unwavering resolve.
